Huge personal injury settlement amounts may seem like jackpots, but they are usually associated with cases of profound, permanent loss, Attorney Anastasia Kranias explains. Contact us if you’ve been hurt in an accident.

There are often reports of huge personal injury settlement amounts in the news – a million dollars here, a few million dollars there.  A million dollars!?  People may see that and think, “This injured man or woman won the lottery!” But what are the stories behind these numbers and what does a successful “winning” personal injury settlement or verdict really mean?

A Closer Look at a Case Involving a Huge Personal Injury Settlement

A $21 million personal injury settlement was recently reached in a personal injury case previously pending in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia, in Roanoke, VA, where Michael Sprick, a German bicyclist, was hit by a truck while attempting to complete his lifelong dream of a solo bike trip across the United States.  It is believed that this is the largest personal injury settlement achieved in the Virginia state and federal systems.

Just wow.  What an excellent recovery for Michael by his attorneys.  However, what is Michael doing with the money from his personal injury settlement? A new home, new cars, a boat, and travel?

No.

Here’s the bigger picture: Michael was athletic, healthy and determined to complete a bike ride that many would never be ambitious enough to attempt.  After the accident, he was left with severe brain and spinal cord injuries and permanently resides in a nursing home in Germany where he receives constant care due to his inability to speak, feed himself, use a computer or walk. Admittedly, upon seeing the headline of this settlement, I scoffed, and became momentarily jealous at the tremendous success of this personal injury settlement.  However, after reading the article, I quickly took a step back and realized the magnitude of what Michael has lost.  To say this moment was humbling is an understatement.

Thankfully, Michael had diligent, hardworking and determined attorneys, who successfully provided Michael a means for proper and compassionate care for the rest of his life.  However, I, as an athlete and occasional dream-pursuer myself, am confident Michael would give every dollar back to have the ability to finish his bike ride.
